Many people assume that the Kremlin is one building, like the White House, but it is, in fact, an entire walled city of twenty acres that encompasses government offices as well as museums and cathedrals. The city was founded on its site in the 11th century and the irregular triangle fortress walls were built in the 15th century. Among the highlights are the Assumption Cathedral, where all of the tsars were crowned; the Diamond Vaults, which house some of Catherine the Great’s jewels; and the Armory Museum, which contains the imperial collection of Fabergé objects as well as royal carriages, thrones, crowns costumes and many other treasures. (The Armory Museum may be compared to America’s Smithsonian for its range of national treasures.)

Indagare Tip: The Armory Museum requires an advance appointment. It is also possible to get early access to the Kremlin so you can wander the grounds before the tourist crowds arrive. Indagare members can contact the Bookings Team to arrange guided visits.
