The Proprietors Bar & Table

A happy accident led me to this cozy spot in downtown Nantucket; American Seasons was closed, so I headed to the owners’ newest venture, Proprietors, for a memorable meal of Halloumi cheese with eggplant puree, orange blossom honey and crispy chick peas, followed by a Socca tart with beets, whipped feta, charred baby carrots and pistachios. The two-story restaurant manages to be elegant yet casual, conservative yet daring and the innovative cocktails somehow rival the delicate cuisine. With the aim of tantalizing the “well-traveled palate,” Proprietors mixes global tastes with a distinctly local menu; dishes are so coherent that Peruvian and Greek cuisines seem as obvious a combination as bread and butter.
