Review

Located on 6th Avenue and 58th Street, 1 Hotel Central Park is a leafy, eco-friendly oasis in the middle of bustling Midtown. The 229-room hotel, whose entire façade is covered in crawling ivy, stands in stark contrast to its surrounding sleek skyscrapers. The interiors are equally nature-inspired, and the lobby is decorated with tables made from tree stumps, leather chairs draped with sheepskin throws, succulents throughout and twinkling recessed lighting. Every aspect of design has clearly been painstakingly thought out and the result is effortlessly chic as well as environmentally friendly (most of the furniture is made from recycled materials).

Some of the best rooms are the four park and city suites, which boast stunning views of the Manhattan skyline and Central Park. Decorated in soft, neutral tones and with green touches like plant walls, terrariums and preserved moss accents, the rooms feel like stylish treehouses. Headboards are fashioned from repurposed wood from water towers and stylish faux animals hides cover the floors. The most outstanding accommodation, however, is the Greenhouse penthouse, a sprawling, two-bedroom suite that effortlessly marries sylvan inspiration with urban luxury. Offering expansive views of the park, the Greenhouse evokes the outdoors: the media room is hung with string lights to foster a garden setting, the dining room is filled with potted plants and the living room has a live wall. The sleek master bathroom holds an oversized copper Japanese soaking tub, while the guest washroom has elegant wood plank walls and bunches of flowers that hang from the ceiling.

Under the leadership of James Beard Award–winner Jonathan Waxman, the hotel’s Jams restaurant serves up California-inspired cuisine in a convivial atmosphere. Waxman, a pioneer of the farm-to-table movement, changes his menus daily based on what is fresh. The spacious dining room, right off the lobby, features floor-to-ceiling windows and high-top communal tables around the bar. There is also a farmstand in the lobby, which offers to-go snacks like fresh fruit, nuts and other light bites. Additional amenities include a sleek, well-equipped gym with views onto 58th Street, but there is no spa.
