Review

Known for its palatial, grand hotels, Lake Como has long been a summer retreat reserved for those who can afford to stay at one of its waterfront grand dames. However, this changed with the 2014 arrival of Filario Hotel and Residences, a boutique property that offers affordable rates and a beautiful, modern design. The intimate property is located on the eastern lakefront, about a 20- and 25-minute water taxi or drive from Bellagio and Como, respectively.

Filario’s 13 rooms and suites are divided into four categories, but all feature private balconies and lake views. The interiors feature light wood floors, a neutral color palette of greys, blues and browns and sumptuous fabric accents of satin and velvet. The best suites are those that are located right at the water’s edge; contact Indagare for advice on which room is best for you. In addition to the rooms, Filario has eight one- to three-bedroom residences, which are scattered throughout the property and feature full kitchens, living rooms and water views. The additional space these accommodations offer is great for groups and families, but couples might prefer the more stylish suites. In-room massages, beauty treatments and laundry and parking services are available to all guests.

Filario’s Bistrò restaurant serves fresh Italian cuisine in its cozy dining room and veranda. Activity-wise, the hotel has kayaks, paddle boards and a paddle boat for guests to use, as well as a small gym. It is worth nothing that Filario is located more than 45 minutes from some of Lake Como’s popular towns (like Como and Cernobbio), which guests may want to visit for dinner. As taxis are very expensive, it is recommended to rent a car.

Who Should Stay

Couples or families looking for good value over old-world glamour. Those who need five-star service, a glamorous scene or lots of amenities will be happier at Villa D’Este or Grand Hotel Tremezzo.
