Review

From the moment you step out of the game vehicle at Tengile River Lodge, the attentive staff invites you to ease into your surroundings with genuine smiles, a cool scented towel and lemongrass tea, before escorting you into the expansive yet intimate nine-suite lodge.

The design of the lodge effortlessly blends in with the surroundings of the African bush—each dark wooden building is discreet and strategically placed with treehouse-like bridges and boardwalks connecting the main lodge to the pool area on one side and the suites on the other. Situated along the banks of the Sand River in Sabi Sands private concession, the property is also ideally located for game-viewing, as animals naturally gravitate toward bodies of water. (Indagare staff members woke up the first morning to a herd of elephants grazing at the river right in front of the lodge and on the morning of their departure, witnesses a leopard skulking along the lodge’s entrance road before leaping into a nearby tree where it had stashed a kill.)

The lodge’s nine free-standing private suites—two of which can be connected to create a suite for families—are incredibly spacious and provide the perfect combination of lavish comfort and an authentic safari experience. Each suite has a large bedroom, dressing room and bath area, a separate living room and a huge private deck that has a lounging nook and plunge pool. The décor is classic safari chic, with carefully selected plush furniture and a color scheme that consists of varying earth tones like green, brown and black, plus touches of thoughtfully placed animal print. The suites are mostly made up of wood aside from the bathroom, which has a beautiful stone wall and green marble that looks like it has been inscribed with tree branches. One could easily spend the duration of their stay within their private suite; however the lodge also has a main villa with a large communal living and dining area, separate bar and lounge, a large shared pool and a small gym and spa treatment room.

andBeyond prides itself on the company’s investment in their specialist guides, who go to a rigorous training school and often remain with andBeyond for many years. This investment really shines through, as guests spend many exciting moments with these African safari experts who are committed to offering iconic animal encounters, while simultaneously providing insight on the importance of wildlife conservation, sustainability and the history of South Africa. The most treasured moments of your time at Tengile will be spent in the game vehicle with your dedicated guide and tracker— coming home to a truly beautiful lodge at the end of the day is just an added benefit.
