Review

Although it is the newest luxury hotel offering in Varanasi, the Brijrama was originally built in 1812 as a palace fortress. It reopened in 2016 after two decades of extensive renovations. The property is located on one of the main ghats, from which you can easily walk into Old Kashi and to the river aarti ceremony. Due to its central location on the Ganges, with the pedestrian-only city to its back, the Brijrama can only be accessed by boat or foot.

The new hotel has preserved many of the features of the original palace, including the stonework in the beautiful central courtyard, the low door-heads and the old-fashioned elevator that rises up to the hotel from the ghats.

Of the thirty-three rooms on the property, only four face the Ganges. Book the Varuna Burj room, which has a dormer window that offers 180-degree views over the river. While there is currently no gym or spa on property, these are expected to be added over the next few years.

There are two dining venues on property: the more formal restaurant Darbhanga, and the casual café Kamalaya, which offers both indoor and outdoor terrace seating with views over the Ganges.

Important Note: Due to its location on the ghats of the Ganges, there is no meat or alcohol offered on property at the Brijrama. It is also not wheelchair-accessible.

Who Should Stay

Repeat visitors to Varanasi, as well as those who want to be in an atmospheric, unique setting right on the ghats. Those who prefer amenities like a gym and spa or the chance to retreat from the pulsing energy on the river should consider the Taj Nadesar.
