Review

As the passion project of artisanal mezcal producers Fausto Zapata and Vicente Cisneros, Casa Silencio brings the more classic experience of staying at a winery or working farm into the agave era.

Surrounded by sparse desert and commanding views of the Sierra Madre Mountains, this boutique retreat captures the essence of Mexico's natural splendor and the sensory power of its natural harvest. Six spacious suites emphasize high design, integrating visual artworks from contemporary artists with décor and trim made from locally sourced organic materials, ensuring that earth tones abound. Indigenous architectural techniques and international inspiration work in harmony with nature, as the sustainable property is completely solar-powered with a zero-waste ethos.

Despite its remote location and minimalist footprint, guests could easily fill a three-night stay without leaving the property. Yoga classes, in-room massage appointments, hiking, biking, master classes in mixology and Oaxacan cooking and a shared plunge pool keep guests entertained. And no visit is complete without a tour of the small-batch mezcal production operation, done in the ancestral tradition, overseen by master mezcalero Saturnino, followed by a spirit tasting and multi-course candlelit dinner presided over by Executive Chef Daniel Robles Sumano. And for those outside guests staying in Oaxaca City, the “Mezcal Experience” offers an afternoon tour and tasting, concluding with a sunset dinner.

Casa Silencio follows a “no-waste” policy and is entirely self-sustaining, thanks to initiatives like solar panels on-property, rainwater harvesting and waste water reuse programs.

Indagare Tip

Travelers in Oaxaca City without an extra night to spare should strongly consider an evening trip out for the “Mezcal Experience” dinner.
