Review
This elegant and intimate hotel is a favorite sanctuary in Cape Town. Just a 10 to 15 minute taxi ride from the hustle and bustle of the city, Compass House is in the chic neighborhood of Bantry Bay, between the shorefront Sea Point and more exclusive Camps Bay. The contemporary villa blends African, Asian and Mediterranean influences throughout its decor. An open floor plan lends a spacious feeling to the main lounge and breakfast space, while the small seating areas are ideal for cozy conversations. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors open on the terrace, with the hypnotic ocean waves in the distance—upon arrival, the concierge escorts each traveler to the patio to enjoy the sparkling sea views during check-in. Lush foliage and gently blowing palm trees add to the calm ambiance.
Compass House has nine rooms, each with views of the Atlantic bound to reinvigorate a guest’s spirit. Rooms are warm and simple with contemporary furnishings and marble bathrooms (most include a separate, spacious soaking tub). Suite One on the top floor retains a special charm with its wood-paneled study and plunge pool. On the lower level, the renovated rooms have marble floors, low-level lighting and a touch screen pad to control everything, as well as direct access to small personal patios by the 60-foot pool.
While the team on-site is minimal, there is always a concierge available to help with restaurant reservations or booking excursions. Guests here often settle in for several weeks, enjoying morning walks and lunch along the Kloof Road cliffs or the Sea Point beach promenade (which is a 10-minute walk away) and leisurely afternoons poolside. Most excursions though necessitate a short car ride. For the adventurous hiker, the hotel is a five-minute ride from the start of Lion’s Head Path to climb Table Mountain. While the hotel does not have a restaurant for lunch or dinner, the concierge can arrange a private chef for dinner.
