Though easily accessible from bustling Jaipur, Dera Amer, set on 60 acres of protected wilderness, feels worlds away from the nearby city. With so much of an India itinerary comprised of loud, colorful, busy cityscapes, a stop at Dera Amer offers a relaxing change of pace and scenery. Travelers distressed by the sight of tourists riding elephants up and down to Amber Fort will be relieved to learn that Dera Amer is dedicated to rescuing the animals from this difficult life. With three elephants currently—and plans to welcome a few more—the goal of the family-run property is simple: not to create a mass-market elephant park that could disturb these creatures' natural life patterns, but to foster an environment where guests can learn about the animals and spend time with them. Guests can wash, feed and bathe the elephants, in addition to walking with them. And elephants are not the only creatures roaming the property; birds, jackals, deer and leopards make occasional appearances, too.

While some guests may just come for the day to enjoy a meal and activities on-site, the property does offer luxury tented accommodations for overnight stays. Tents are all identical, with power showers, electricity and colorful furnishings. There is a separate dining tent, though dinners can be set up all around the property. And while there is no formal room service, the attentive staff is available to provide a snack or drink in between meals. Stays at Dera Amer are all-inclusive, so all meals and activities (with the exception of alcohol) are included in the hotel rate.
