Review

The conservation passion project and personal home of Kristine Tompkins and her late husband Doug, Explora Lodge in Patagonia National Park is a soulful, undiscovered gem in the remote mountains of Chilean Patagonia. Upon arrival, guests take in the tall lush-green or golden-yellow trees that surround the lodge, depending on the time of year. Described as “barely explored,” The Chacabuco Valley is home to a diverse variety of ecosystems and species, such as guanacos, pumas and Andean condors. It was named as a priority for conservation by The National Forestry Corporation.

An intimate, authentically Chilean lodge only has 13 rooms, comprising eight standard rooms and five suites. (Meanwhile, with over 75 staff members attending to them, guests can expect a warm and highly personalized experience.) Many of the materials that make up the crisp, yet natural, exterior and interiors are locally sourced, including recycled wood and stones from nearby quarries. Guests begin to experience nature from the comfort of the rooms, as each of them have sweeping views of the Tamango and Tamanguito hills.

The property’s expert-level guides offer a range of ways to explore the diverse surroundings—by van, biking, hiking, kayaking or even self-guided pathways. The lodge has outlined six different exploration zones, each containing its own cultural and geographic offerings and for each mode of exploration, multiple trails and routes are offered. Guests can modify their experience to best suit their comfort levels, whether that is traversing comfortably by van or choosing a more rigorous combination of hiking and kayaking.

Indulge at the indoor-outdoor spa or captivating cuisine offerings, as most of the menu is made of fresh, local produce. The on-property restaurant is designed by the owner of Don Julio and has been featured as one of the best restaurants in Latin America, according to the ranking of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants.
