This long-awaited resort opened in November 2021 in the winelands of Calistoga at the northern end of Napa Valley. And when we say “in the winelands,” we mean literally amidst Elusa Winery from Thomas Rivers Brown. Surprisingly, it is the first hotel in the region (and the first Four Seasons in the world) located within a working winery. The results are beautiful: from nearly every window, and from the walkways that meander around the property, guests can see vines.

More than a dozen slate-colored cottages are home to the resort’s 85 rooms and suites, designed by local interior designer Erin Martin and Santa Monica-based hospitality design firm Hirsch Bedner Associate. Interiors offer a modern take on farmhouse living in muted, neutral tones: concrete floors, gray-hued beadboard walls, natural wooden headboards. The huge bathrooms are a particular highlight, with large double vanities, and a deep soaking tub along with the rain shower. Most rooms look out over the vineyards, although some face other parts of the property, usually with the Palisades in the background. Every room and suite features a balcony or terrace and upper floors have the added benefit of a vaulted ceiling. And for more space and seclusion, the three-bedroom Estate Villa is at the edge of the vineyard, with its own private pool and outdoor lounge area. Note that accommodations, while glamorous, are not as soulful as other California wine country hotels, and the cottages which house them are spaced close together.

Two of San Francisco’s leading chefs (hailing from Michelin-starred Coi and Quince), plus the sommelier from Gary Danko have helped make the resort one of the new foodie destinations for Napa Valley. Campo is an ideal lunch spot, serving authentic, farm-fresh Cali-Mexican cuisine. But it’s the signature restaurant TRUSS that is a must-try. Menus here are a celebration of all things Napa, showcasing local produce (including such delicacies as caviar from California white sturgeon), and an extensive wine list that features Calistoga, and Elusa, prominently.

In between meals, wine tastings and exploring the vineyards (by foot or on the property’s two-wheelers) guests can spend their day poolside or at the spa. Spa Talisa makes the most of Calistoga’s sunny disposition, with a spa garden whirlpool, outdoor mud baths and misting decks in addition to its eight treatment rooms. There is also a 24-hour fitness center.

Anyone wanting to do laps (or seeking quiet) can enjoy the 75-foot, adults-only outdoor lap pool, while the main resort pool welcomes all ages, with splashing areas for children. Attendants are on hand to bring hourly refreshments, cooling facial sprays and glasses of chilled white wines—you’re in Napa after all.
