Review

There’s a reason that Glencoe’s “guardians” chose not to call it a hotel: their vision of creating a simple, homey environment that delivers top-notch service brings the “serviced apartment” concept to the countryside. After purchasing the stately home built by Scottish-born Canadian railroad tycoon and philanthropist Lord Strathcona, the new owners completely redesigned Glencoe’s layout to offer guests an intimate retreat where they can enjoy a five-course gourmet meal in their pajamas or relax in a claw foot tub while looking out at the breathtaking highlands.

The main house boasts just one public gathering area. The remainder is divided into four 1-bedroom suites and three 2-bedroom suites. Each suite has a separate living room with a wood burning fireplace that you can enjoy year-round, a full-size dining table, an iPod preloaded with 26,000 songs and a DVD library. While several suites also have a separate dining room, they all come with a generously-stocked “maxibar” with snacks, beverages, wines and, of course, a fine selection of Scotch Whisky. For those who really enjoy the outdoors, Suites 1 and 2 each have a large private terrace with a lounge area, barbeque grill, and a 6-person hot tub.

Guests looking for a more contemporary setting will enjoy staying at one of the six newly-created Bell Tower Suites. Located just 100 feet from the main house, each of these bright, airy apartments comes with a fully-stocked kitchen, a living room with a wood-burning stove, a dining area, and a large private decked-terrace with a barbeque grill and hot tub.

In addition to all of these lovely amenities, guests can enjoy leisurely strolls through Glencoe’s woodland garden and around the private 10-acre lake. Guests wishing to explore the area further can arrange biking, hiking, horseback riding, rock climbing, shooting and boating excursions. For those who prefer the indoors, the hotel is happy to arrange private massage treatments in your suite, which are provided by a local spa partner.

Who Should Stay
