Located on the beautiful St. Andrew’s Square, and housed in the former headquarters for the British Linen Bank, the stately Gleneagles Townhouse is both grand yet intimate (and sophisticated yet discreet). The property has only 33 guest rooms with four categories: the nook, the house, the town, and the master bedroom. The bedrooms are impeccably designed with soft pastels, floral patterns, deep velvets and the classic Gleneagles green.

**Note: **If you’re concerned about space, it is important to opt for a master bedroom, the hotel’s highest room category.

Historically, St. Andrew’s Square (which only recently opened to the public as a park) was surrounded by the city’s grandest bank buildings; the Townhouse was created by combining two buildings, which resulted in a bit of a labyrinth of staircases and passageways not making it the easiest property to get around.

Access to the rooftop bar, Lamplighters, is for guests of the hotel and members only. With Georgian statues lining the roof stunning city views of Edinburgh, including St. Andrews square below, it's the perfect location to watch the sunset. There is indoor and outdoor seating, excellent cocktails and a DJ’s on occasional nights. On the ground floor, The Spence has quickly become a hotspot restaurant and bar in the city. Located in the former banking hall, the tall ceilings and marble columns are framed by palm fronds, an art deco bar and plush banquettes. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner (with a special Brunch Club menu at the end of each month), The Spence menu focuses on modern, Scottish-inspired cuisine with highlights like roast Scottish lamb rump.

The Strong Rooms wellness facilities offers guests and members a state-of-the-art gym and over 40 complimentary fitness classes, all housed in the bank vault of the building.

The hotel is only a 3-minute walk from The Balmoral. It’s close to all the action of Edinburgh, but set back from the chaos of Princes Street and Waverly Train Station.

    Who Should Stay

The hotel feels more like a member’s club than a full-service five star hotel; you may not, for example, find a bellman at the door ready to greet you upon arrival. It is best for couples or families with older children as the Townhouse feels like a spot to see-and-be-seen in Edinburgh. It has a trendy and glamorous scene.
