A high-end option on Easter Island (besides Explora Rapa Nui), Nayara Hangaroa is best for those visitors who like their freedom and easy access to town.

Well-situated on the edge of town, Hangaroa offers programs that appeal to both activity-oriented and DIY guests. It is the latest addition to the Nayara portfolio, which operates a small group of hotels across Costa Rica, Panama and Chile’s Atacama.
The property is expansive, with island chic design touches like driftwood panelling paired with a South American style evident in the Argentinian leather-upholstered furniture—of course, some elements are wholly unique, like the free-standing decorative Cyprus tree trunks or deep black ceramic bathtubs. The 75 well-sized guest rooms (including eight suites) have private porches and views overlooking the sea and town. The architecture of the main buildings as well as the guest rooms are modeled after the ancient structures of the island; grass roofs and dark stone facades are designed to blend in with the landscape.
The hotel’s proximity to town provides easy access for exploring and dining at the local restaurants—though the property offers full board and half board rates for those who want to include meals and excursions in their visit. Bikes and ATV’s are available on a first come, first served basis should guests want to traverse the island like a local.
Two aims of the hotel are giving back to the community and maintaining an ecologically-sustainable property. The spa, as well as all excursions, are sub-contracted out to local companies. Hangaroa proudly has instituted water filtration systems, recycling programs and serves organic, locally-produced food. Note that the best items on the menu of the two restaurants are the simplest, featuring local seafood (tuna and lobster) and produce (pineapple and sweet potato).
Enclosed within a volcanic rock wall, the spa mimics the protected gardens ancient Rapanui people built to shelter vegetables from wind. The interior resembles a Japanese rock garden, with sand-covered ground disturbed by the occasional scattered volcanic rock. Wooden walkways connect six treatment rooms with plunge pools, outdoor showers, a sauna and adjacent individual hot tubs. In addition to massage, a lymphatic treatment is offered, the ideal way to adjust after a long flight.
Who Should Stay
Those who like to design their own itineraries and do some excursions on their own will appreciate the freedom that Hangaroa offers its guests. The location just outside of town makes for a less intimate experience but is very convenient.
