Review

Located in the peaceful Karen neighborhood of Nairobi, Hemingways Nairobi is positioned between the city’s National Park and the foot of the Ngong Hills. It is a 45-minute drive from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. The property opened in 2013 and is a 45-suite hotel overlooking manicured gardens and lush greenery.

Suites are arranged on the ground and upper floors of two wings, the Hemingway Wing and the Blixen Wing. The top two rooms are The Hemingway Suite and The Blixen Suite located on the first floor of their respective wings. The Hemingway Suite is a 2,583-square-foot two-bedroom with a living room, study, dining room, kitchen, terrace and personal butler access. There are a further 19 Executive Suites and 24 Deluxe Suites (the entry level rooms on property). No matter your room choice at Hemingways, you will have plenty of space to spread out. All suites are bright and airy, with simple, comfortable and clean interiors that have hints of classic Kenyan safari, including netted four-poster beds and leather steamer trunks.

The lobby at Hemingways Nairobi has a high-ceiling and leads out to expansive terraces facing the Ngong hills. The hotel has a gym and a spa housed in its own wing overlooking the outdoor pool and property’s gardens. The Brasserie, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, is the main restaurant and serves a large menu with international dishes. The Hemingways Bar is the hangout spot for pre- or post-dinner drinks with a terrace from which you can watch the sun set behind the Ngong hills. Hemingways also has a wine cellar—which seats up to 12 guests for a tasting—and a pool bar for light snacks and drinks. The property also has a popular afternoon tea, enjoyed in the Residents’ Lounge or on the terrace.

Who Should Stay

This property is perfect for guests looking for a full-service resort in Nairobi with grounds, a pool, gym and reliable Wi-Fi. Hemingways Nairobi is also a great option for families with younger children. However, if you’re looking for charm and a sense of place, you will be better off at Eden or Giraffe Manor.
