Review
Herdade da Malhadinha Nova’s five country houses—spread out amidst olive groves, vineyards and cork trees—are surrounded by nature, making this hidden gem an ideal place to relax after time in Lisbon.
It’s in the town of Castro Verde, a large portion of which is protected under EU law to preserve endangered bird species. Existing buildings can be restored and repurposed, but no new structures can be built. The natural beauty of the area motivated Herdade da Malhadinha Nova’s owners, the Soares family, to transform their estate, offering a mix of both traditional and contemporary accommodations. Décor in the traditional rooms varies slightly, but all are colorful and warm, with exposed wooden beams. The contemporary rooms are sleek, with a cream palette and modern touches like a large soaking tub in certain rooms. Four of the country houses feature inviting common areas, with books lining the walls, a small bar and fireplace—often lit with a roaring fire upon arrival. The one country house in which you will not find common areas is the Casa das Pedras, which instead offers four very private suites, perfect for couples.
Days at Malhadinha Nova are spent either relaxing by the pool or enjoying the many activities offered. Families will love horseback riding, ATV rides, biking, fishing, visiting farm animals, cooking classes and more. Couples may also find themselves pleasantly occupied by wine tastings at the on-property winery and spa treatments—and for those seeking more adventure, hot air ballooning and skydiving is available as well.
Rooms to Get
Couples looking for a romantic stay should consider one of the four suites in the Casa das Pedras building, which each have a private terrace, plunge pool and secluded vibe. Larger families can book individual rooms within the same country house or even take over the country houses, Casa do Ancoradouro or Monte da Peceguina. There are also villas on the property. We recommend contacting the Indagare Bookings Team for more information on which accommodations fit your specific needs and interests.
