Review

Under hours by car or train from Tokyo, the Fuji Five Lakes region of Japan is a mecca for nature lovers, offering hiking trails, water sports, hot springs, shrines, caves and, of course, the constant view of iconic Mount Fuji—a wonder whether you’re summiting the volcano itself or gazing at it from below. Hoshinoya Fuji, a modern and minimal property, is nestled into a pine forest on an overlook above Lake Kawaguchiko, the most visited of the five lakes. It’s a prime location for jaw-dropping Mount Fuji views.

Hoshinoya Fuji’s concept feeds on camping fantasies, outfitting guests with all the elements to “rough it” in a luxe, comfy way: a backpack containing a headlamp, maps and all-natural bug spray; refined camping food, such as grilled meats (including boar and venison) and local vegetables; and simple accomodations stocked with wellies, metal camping cups and room keychains that double as bird callers. The 40 concrete “cabins” feature a sleek, all-white decor with one immense wall of glass that draws all attention to the epic vistas outside. Each cabin opens onto a private outdoor terrace, which feels like an extension of the living area and has its own campfire.

Guests climb up stairs from their cabins to reach the common spaces, including a log house-inspired restaurant and the Cloud Terrace, a network of walkways, wooden platforms and canvas coverings that melds nicely into its surroundings.

The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons: cherry blossoms in the spring, rust-colored foliage in the fall, snowy peaks in the winter. Additionally, the hotel offers a number of activities in small groups to take advantage of the great outdoors, including e-bike tours, horseback riding, trekking, food-smoking workshops and nightly fireside music performances. Early-morning canoeing, which allows for an alternative perspective of Mount Fuji while gliding over the tranquil lake, is a highlight.

Who Should Stay

Families and couples looking for a value-oriented escape from Japan’s hectic cities that is near Mount Fuji and easily accessible from Tokyo. Accommodations verge on barebones, so this property is best for nature lovers and adventurous types who won’t mind the lack of bells and whistles. Kids will adore the activities, the s’mores by the fireside and the camping fantasy.
