This intimate property in Cartagena’s old city feels more like a family home than a hotel.

Review
Set in a 17th-century building in the heart of Cartagena’s old city, Hotel Amarla has only seven rooms and is brimming with old-world charm and colonial grandeur. The property’s name means “to love her” in Spanish, which aptly summarizes the story behind the hotel: the owners fell in love with the property and have created a boutique hotel that truly feels like a home away from home for travelers. Upon arrival, guests are greeted by the general manager, as well as their assigned host, who acts as a 24/7 personal concierge and strives to make every desire a reality.
The hotel is decorated with beautiful, handcrafted items and an eclectic mix of antiques acquired during the owners’ travels around the world. Every room is unique and well-designed, from the light fixtures to the painted pillows to the silk bathrobes from Bali found in each bathroom. Indagare recommends the bedrooms on the higher levels, as those on lower levels tend to be smaller.
A highlight of the hotel is its rooftop pool, which is a beautiful and refreshing retreat after a long day of city exploration. The rooftop, which has views of Cartagena’s cityscape and colorful Cathedral, also has a spa area (offering al fresco massages), an open-air cinema, a bar and tables where guests can enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner. Orange and lemon trees, spearmint, basil and rosemary are also grown on the roof, and the hotel uses these fresh herbs and fruits in its homemade teas and cocktails (and the delicious aromas from the garden are carried throughout the property).
There is no gym, and the hotel does not yet have a full-service restaurant, but a complimentary breakfast is offered, and the hotel’s chef can prepare lunch or dinner for guests looking to dine on-property.
Who Should Stay
Couples, families with older children and groups looking for a hotel takeover. Hotel Amarla has an age minimum of 12 years old, but exceptions can be made upon request. The hotel does not have an elevator and is not equipped to accommodate travelers with mobility issues.
