Review
The Hotel Josef's futuristic aesthetic stands in stark contrast to the Gothic and Baroque buildings surrounding it. The all-white lobby with its white leather club chairs, glass tables and floor-to-ceiling windows would be ideal for an Austin Powers scene.
Guests squeeze into tiny elevators to arrive at small minimalist rooms, jazzed up by bright-orange or -pink blankets. (Two buildings, called Orange and Pink, share a courtyard and a light-filled restaurant.) The design struck me as more fun to look at than to live in, like the neonish Philippe Starck Eros chairs lining a hallway that please the eye but don’t feel great if you sit in them for long. But then maybe that’s the point. There is a small gym on the roof of the Orange building, but the bar area is more populated and generates much more enthusiasm.
