Review

In striking contrast to the historic buildings that fill Old Montreal, the Hotel William Gray occupies an eight-story glass tower and is located just around the corner from the iconic Place Jacques Cartier, a popular square in Montreal. But the hotel, which opened in 2016, is not all new; the glass structure sits atop two historic buildings that date back to the 18th century; Maison Edward-William-Gray and Maison Cherrier. And while the majority of the hotel’s 127 rooms are in the modern wing (16 are in the maisons), a sense of history is eminent throughout.

Boasting floor-to-ceiling glass windows, concrete walls and a true minimalist design, the rooms and suites at the William Gray are some of the most modern in the city. The Maison rooms, too, feature a Scandinavian design, but retain a sense of old-world Montreal thanks to original details like slanted brick walls. All rooms boast custom-made beds with Frette linens, local art and beautiful marble bathrooms complete with large soaking tubs and showers with multiple body jets and Le Labo products. Some of the accommodations have patios and views of the St. Lawrence River, while the 975-square-foot penthouse, dubbed “The Residence,” has a wrap-around terrace, outdoor Jacuzzi and full-service kitchen.

The William Gray boasts a bevy of amenities, including restaurant Maggie Oakes, a stunning rooftop bar, lifestyle boutique OTH, Café Olimpico (the second outpost of a beloved Mile End coffee shop), a fitness center, a 5,600-square-foot spa and a cozy living room space with a marble pool table and vinyl listening station.
