At a Glance

Le Fer à Cheval was built in 1938 by the local blacksmith (ergo the name) and converted into a lovely, quiet chalet-style hotel in the 1960s.

Review

Located just outside the center of town, Le Fer à Cheval has 53 rooms and suites with cozy beds, antique furniture and floor-to-ceiling wood paneling—though some rooms boast a wall upholstered in faux fur, a bold décor choice that nonetheless works quite well. Rooms are generally well-sized and are a good option for families with small children.

The historic property also boasts a gym and spa that includes seven treatment rooms, an indoor pool, steambath, Jacuzzi and sauna. There are two restaurants and a beautiful, rambling bar with multiple nooks that welcome skiers and non-skiers for coffees, aperitifs and after-dinner drinks. Adjacent to the lounge is a cozy cinema room that attracts guests ranging from the very young to fully grown.

Parts of the property feel in need of an update, particularly when compared to other hotels in town, but the old-world European style is comfortable and, like the fur throws on the sumptuous beds, nurturing.

Who Should Stay

Families and couples who don’t mind being based slightly outside of town and prefer an old-world European aesthetic.
