Review

The deep red, 16th-century townhouse on Largo Sao Domingos at the base of beloved shopping street Rua das Flores exudes a kind of Parisian elegance. Indeed, the ten-room boutique hotel is the type that could be found in the French capital’s Marais neighborhood.

Rooms are beautifully done with refined furnishings like silk upholstered headboards, checkered patterned curtains, medieval stone statues, Indian miniatures, 19th-century prints and the like (though closet space is limited). In fact, passers-by might mistake the entrance for an art gallery, with the magnificent sculptures in the windows. To keep the atmosphere lighthearted, though, there are also fun, quirky design elements like a men’s necktie wrapped around the men’s room handle to denote which gender the bathroom is for.

Amenities are abundant in the guest rooms: many have French doors that open onto balconies with city views; the marble bathrooms, though small, offer amenities by Porto soap brand Portus Cale. Additional services, however, are limited: breakfast is offered at a large table on the ground floor, and there is no gym or spa, but guests are granted access to those at the Yeatman Hotel across the river.

Who Should Stay

Travelers who prefer a boutique hotel experience in a prime location over lots of bells and whistles in terms of service and hotel amenities.
