Milu’s traditional facade belies its modern interior. Guests are welcomed to a sophisticated space complete with a glass-enclosed elevator, contemporary art (that happens to be for sale) and a design aesthetic that mixes art-deco with old-world glamour. The owner, Carmel Ilan, is an artist herself, and the property is reminiscent of both an art gallery and cultural salon: there is a coffee bar and library filled with classic volumes alongside cutting-edge literature; and a rooftop bar that feels like an art installation in itself.

Rooms are comfortable, well-appointed and feature a natural color palate (livened by lemon-yellow pops of color or Missoni bedspreads). Excellent showers and bespoke toiletries in the bathrooms add to Milu’s boutique vibe. Considering the hotel’s low nightly rate and excellent location (the Duomo, Palazzo Strozzi, Uffizi and Ponte Vecchio are all closeby), the Milu is an unmatchable option in Florence.

Culture hounds will find Milu in a perfect location and appreciate its hip atmosphere. This is not necessarily the hotel where you want to lounge in bed all day on your honeymoon, but it is a great spot to explore the city while still being comfortable.
