Review

Housed in the landmark Jarmulowsky Bank building built in 1912, Nine Orchard brings elegance and five-star service to this corner of Manhattan’s Lower East Side. After a ten-year, historically-conscious renovation of the iconic Beaux-Arts structure, the hotel opened in the summer of 2022.

From the moment you are greeted by the welcoming doormen and enter Nine Orchard, with its subtle but Deco-inspired Gucci wallpaper, you will feel as though you are home.  The comfortable lobby is the perfect spot to have a coffee. The professional staff is warm and attentive with a relaxed and youthful vibe that one would expect from a downtown hotel.

Nine Orchard’s 116 high-ceilinged rooms and suites are divided over the building’s 12 stories. There are six tiers of rooms (ranging in size from 230-475 square-feet) and suites (400-1,200 square-feet). Some suites have sizable ivy-laden brick terraces furnished with lounge chairs and dining tables—ideal for taking in the city views with your coffee and breakfast. With large windows, each room is light and airy during the day yet cozy and quiet at night, when the heavy drapes are drawn. The rooms feel timeless: simple, yet elegant, combining the best of mid-century design and classic style alongside modern amenities. Incredible detail was put into selecting the lighting fixtures and styling the well-appointed accessories, including the Nine Orchard notepads and stationery products found in each desk drawer. Spacious bathrooms, some with deep tubs, reflect the overall design scheme and have Takamichi bath products. Each room comes equipped with a well-stocked bar cabinet, discreetly hidden within the generous built-ins, and equipped with custom-made Ojas speakers programmed with New York-inspired stations curated by Devon Turnbull and DJ Stretch Armstrong.  Wanting to create the residential feeling of a New York City apartment building, each room is uniquely assigned an A-Z letter along with the respective floor number, as opposed to traditional hotel room numbers. The rooms and hallways are filled with New York City inspired prints by well-known artists such as Donald Baechler and Kiki Smith.

For dining, Ignacio Mattos (of Michelin-starred Estela) is behind Corner Bar, which has become an art world hot spot for lunch, drawing dealers, collectors and the Dimes Square crowd. And the Insta-famous (for good reason) Swan Room, the hotel’s main lounge, is a fabulous spot for drinks and light bites. Private parties can also reserve the rooftop bar and several other spaces.

While the hotel doesn’t have a gym on site, Nine Orchard offers access to guests at the nearby TMPL gym on Avenue A.

Who Should Stay

Art lovers and couples wanting to stay in a hip downtown neighborhood without sacrificing service and hospitality.  The spacious rooms and suites are also attractive for families and guests eager to explore the vast array of chic restaurants, galleries and cultural institutions on the Lower East Side and in nearby neighborhoods of Soho and Tribeca.
