Review
In contrast with India’s chaotic cities and man-made wonders (palaces, forts, etc.), the coastal southwestern state of Kerala is all about relaxation and natural beauty, and all the more so in its backwaters. The region—referred to as "god’s own country"—is home to 560 miles of waterways, the second biggest lake in India and countless canals. The draw here is the stunning natural beauty, and a way of life that forces one to slow down. The intimate and charming Purity Resort, a Relais & Chateaux property built by a Florentine architect in 2003, is just the place to experience this serene and secluded destination.
The 14 rooms are fresh, spacious and well laid-out, with a stylish and contemporary appeal. Think bright pops of color, poured concrete colors and modern art pieces alongside antiques that comes as a pleasant surprise given the rustic location. Booking a room with a lake view is a must, as it provides the ultimate sense of place. Other than the idyllic water vistas, the property’s highlights include the restaurant that showcases Kerala’s glorious, aromatic food, lakeside swimming pool set in the lush gardens, and complimentary sunset canoe ride with a local fisherman. There is also an Ayurvedic spa on-site, and while there is no gym, guests are welcome to join the free yoga class every morning.
Who Should Stay
Couples seeking a blissfully serene escape in Kerala’s backwaters would love this hotel, which is reached by a bumpy road at the back-end of a local village. It's certainly off-the-beaten-path—but that’s part of the appeal.
