"In Penn Quarter, devotées of design hotels should not miss the quirky yet grand Riggs Washington DC, which opened in early 2020 within a restored 19th-century bank once employed by the presidents. The façade matches the surrounding monuments—but the décor inside is alive with color and energy, with abstract marbled wallpaper and a massive floral sculpture on the ground floor. For a weekend splurge, book one of the four magnificently fanciful First Ladies suites, which are equally opulent (and all sized at 500 square feet) but feature entirely different color schemes, from Millennial pink to canary yellow. If nothing else, stop by for an aperitif at the Café Riggs, where soaring Corinthian columns, a long marble bar and a swanky atmosphere practically require the ordering of Champagne and oysters." — Senior Editor Elizabeth Harvey

Review

The Riggs Washington DC presents a fascinating blend of old-world charm and quirky whimsicality that offers a unique experience in the heart of the city.

The first U.S. property by the Lore Group—renowned for its acclaimed properties Sea Containers London and Pulitzer Amsterdam—the Riggs is housed in a former bank dating back to 1891, which lends its name to the property. This 19th-century influence is present throughout the property's design, and the Lore Group aimed to revive this iconic building for a new generation of travelers, while preserving its historical significance—creating a unique blend of elegance and eccentricity that sets the Riggs apart from many of D.C.'s more conventional accommodations.

The 181 rooms and suites (including connecting options) each offer something unique, including playful nods to the hotel’s history, such as mini bars disguised as safes and the gym that is located in the former vault. The hotel also has four First Lady Suites, with design schemes inspired by the unique personalities and styles of Ida Mckinley (in Millennial pink and magenta), Caroline Harrison (in baby and royal blue), Louisa Adams (in black, gold and canary yellow) and Angelica Van Buren (in scarlet and chartreuse).

The buzzy downstairs bar, Silver Lyan, offers a globally-inspired and innovative cocktail experience that captivates both locals and visitors alike. The other dining outlet, Café Riggs, is a delightful culinary experience featuring a blend of classic and contemporary dishes. Whether enjoying a leisurely brunch or a cozy dinner, patrons are treated to impeccable service and a tasteful ambiance that makes every visit memorable.

There is a 24-hour gym; there is no spa, but massages can be booked for in-room service. Valet parking and electric vehicle charging stations are available, and guests can also borrow the on-site bicycles for exploration.

For adventurous D.C. visitors looking for a change of pace, the Riggs immediately distinguishes itself with its unique design and top-notch dining—all set within the confines of historic architecture.
