Review

Located on a private stretch of the Zambezi, Royal Chundu does not share its waterways with other local camps, so it offers guests an exclusive wilderness experience. The mighty Zambezi frames the a stay at the hotel from beginning to end; upon arrival, guests are treated to a stunning view of the dramatic waterway from the driveway. With vibrant, wave-like murals featuring geometric patterns, the main lodge echoes the colors and textures that are characteristic of the Zambezi. Highlighting the contrast between the wet and dry seasons, the walls are done in cool and warm colors including deep cobalt blue and burnt orange. The local culture is emphasized through feather headdresses, which are mounted along the walls in place of artwork.

The ten suites are styled with regal furnishings including oriental tea chests, traditional Zambian stools made by local craftsmen and handmade pillows. Each boasts an expansive deck and interrupted views of the Zambezi. Mornings begin with cappuccinos, delivered along with guests’ early wake up call and afternoons are spent on game drives, canoeing or lounging by the riverside pool. Evenings begin languidly with sunset cocktail cruises.

The culinary program is geared towards fine dining, but Royal Chundu also offers a kids menu, so picky eaters will be taken care of. Perfect for families, Royal Chundu has a long list of activities to entertain younger travelers while parents enjoy an afternoon siesta. Note: There are two family suites, but children are welcome in any room.
