Review

This property dates back to the 14th century and evokes the feel of a typical Istrian village through an effortless marriage between old and new. While a newly refurbished centuries-old farmhouse sits on one side of the property, the other is home to new buildings constructed to mirror the old village, resulting in a cohesive property that feels at once fresh and historical.

San Canzian Village & Hotel resides in a quiet country setting, surrounded by vineyards, rolling hills, and lush, forested grounds. Its 24 rooms and suites each have cool, contemporary interiors with wooden floorboards, beige, soft gray, and white tones, and abstract art by a Croatian artist who is the brother of one of the owners. The rooms on both the old and new sides of the property are cozy, inviting and subtly refined. That said, due to the designer’s desire to preserve the bones of the historic farmhouse, the rooms on the old side tend to be smaller, with lower ceilings and less outdoor space.

The cuisine feels sophisticated and thoughtful, created by a young, talented chef from Zagreb who uses the local land to cultivate innovative, yet typical Istrian elements into his menu. Seasonal ingredients are handpicked from the hotel’s garden, olive oil is pressed from the olive groves and there is an on-site spring for water used to brew the coffee. The service is warm and friendly and is always available to offer suggestions to better any stay. With just 24 rooms, staff gets to know each guest on a more personal level, allowing make you feel right at home in this special place.

Although the dining offerings, small spa, and pool overlooking the landscape allow guests to while away a day on property, one of the main draws of San Canzian Village & Hotel is exploring the countryside. Activities such as olive oil and wine tasting, hiking, biking and village hopping are all within a short drive and a part of the experience when visiting this property.
