Review

The St. Regis tower raises the bar for luxury in Egypt with an artisan’s eye for detail, butler service and a sprawling spa. The St. Regis Cairo is grand, indulgent and resort-like.

After a drive through chaotic Cairo, guests step into a three-story foyer crowned with a chandelier of cascading crystals (the second largest chandelier in the world). Two alabaster staircases curve to meet at the top. Tone set, guests continue to the leafy and lavish fifth-floor lobby. Arabic motifs like carved wooden screens, arched entryways and a bubbling water garden set the scene. A vast stretch of windows overlooks the Nile and the traditional felucca boats that pass by. Note that typically, guests enter through a small driveway where they go through metal detectors before taking the elevator directly to the 5th floor lobby rather than entering via the grand foyer.

There are three towers that make up the St. Regis complex; two for hotel guests and one with residences for purchase. A mix of rooms, suites and apartments await in the two guest towers. The 80 apartments are reserved for guests with longer stays. The 280 rooms and suites have the indulgent feel of a private dressing room with fluffy ottomans, free-standing mirrors and a color palette of cream, pale pink and silver. Handmade papyrus wall coverings and oriental-inspired rugs lend a sense of place. The suites are spacious and residential in feel, with dark woods and a more masculine color scheme. Bathrooms feature deep marble soaking tubs surrounded by glittering mosaics. The best rooms and suites have balconies that overlook the Nile and the posh island of Zamalek. In St. Regis fashion, each guest room has a designated butler who is there to assist with arrangements in advance and provide personalized service during the stay.

After a long day of touring, the many dining options at the St. Regis are particularly inviting. There are sophisticated classics at J&G Steakhouse by Jean-Georges Vongerichten; relaxed Italian cuisine at La Zisa; coffee, tea and bites at Il Café Bar the all-day bar inside La Zisa; delicious Singaporean Cuisine at Tianma right off the lobby lounge; and breezy Mediterranean and Egyptian mezzes at poolside Sirocco. For after-dinner drinks, there is the classic St. Regis Bar & Water Garden. Like the iconic King Cole Bar at the St. Regis New York, the back wall of the bar features a painting by a local artist that sets the scene. The signature Bloody Mary is inspired by Egyptian hibiscus tea. For those looking to keep the evening going, the sleek Nile-view Envy lounge stays open late—there is also a cigar lounge

The outdoor pool is set on a seventh-floor terrace with views over the Nile. For relaxation away from the Egyptian sun, there are leafy gardens, shady cabanas and the impressive Iridium Spa. The two-story spa is equipped with saunas, steam rooms, ice rooms, salon, fitness center, an indoor pool and seven treatment suites.
