Review

Located within the 1,500 acre “Shangri-La” Arabia coffee estate in the town of Koratu, the Manor offers easy access to the Ngorongoro Crater for families and adults alike. The property was built from the ground up in 2008 and pays homage to old-world Afro European architecture with its traditional Cape-Dutch style main house with its high white walls, dark wooden exposed beams and wide-planked floorboards. Each of the 18 suites suite has a private entrance and terrace, log-burning fireplace and large bathroom with Victorian-style claw foot tub. The suites are simple and traditional in style, with white-washed walls, oriental rugs and dark wood furniture. The Stable Cottage is a single duplex structure with three bedrooms to accommodate a family of six.

The main draw of the Manor’s location is the proximity to Ngorongoro Crater, a natural wonder of the world, as well as Olduvai Gorge, where the 1.8-million-year-old skeleton of one of the first humanoids was found. Guests are a quick 40-minute drive from the main gate, and another 30-minute drive from the Crater floor, where they are likely to see the Big Five, including a number of protected rhinos. Other activities accessible from property include game drives in Lake Manyara National Park, horseback riding around the coffee estate, mountain biking and use of the Manor’s two spa treatment rooms. The facilities on property include the basement billiards room, cinema room, a small pool and a lovely bar and restaurant in the main building. The property is a nice starting point for a Tanzania safari trip, as it is only a 40-minute drive from Lake Manyara airstrip and 2.5-hour drive from Arusha.

Who Should Stay

Adults and families who would prefer a more traditional, manor-style property and are fine with being a 40-minute drive from the Crater. Families with children may want to consider Gibb’s Farm for a more relaxed, countryside experience.
