Review
The Mercer Barcelona refreshingly mixes elements of old and new, as the Roman and medieval elements of this historic building are displayed next to contemporary interiors and modern luxuries.
The décor is refined and understated, and soothing shades of dark blue and grey pop against the building’s bare stone walls. Separating the lobby from the rest of the ground floor is the hotel’s interior courtyard, dotted with orange trees, which is a welcoming place for guests to enjoy a morning coffee or evening cocktail alfresco.
The 28 rooms all share the same design elements with muted tones and hardwood floors. Some rooms are built into an existing Roman tower, further embracing the original architecture. Free-standing walls separate the bedroom from the bathroom, making the space feel refreshingly larger and lighter. Molton Brown amenities are thoughtfully displayed throughout.
Operating a hotel in a historic setting with building restrictions means that some amenities are notably absent, such as a gym and spa. There is, however, a beautiful rooftop terrace with sun beds, a plunge pool and a small bar.
Who Should Stay
Architecture and modern design fans and history buffs will be happy here. The hotel’s boutique vibe is serene and quiet, which large families or action-seeking adventurers may not like. There is also no spa or gym, so guests will need to consider what kinds of amenities they can do without.
