The Ritz-Carlton Rancho Mirage

For those who want to retreat from the Coachella Valley floor to catch terrific sunsets and sunrises, the Ritz-Carlton, Rancho Mirage is the best family-friendly resort option in town, with its tried-and-true traditional styling and service.

In 2005, the Lodge at Rancho Mirage was shuttered and its insides were completely gutted (it was originally built in 1988). The renovations were extensive and long-delayed, but in 2013, the Ritz-Carlton was born from the ashes. A decade later, changes came again with renovations to each of its 244 guest rooms in 2023. While its neighbors aspire to the Mid-century Mid-century Modern style that made Palm Springs famous, the Ritz-Carlton is very much a traditional outpost of the luxury hotel chain.

On the one hand, the brand’s luxe aesthetic is undeniably beautiful, and the level of service is excellent. Note, however, that by straying from the traditional Palm Springs look, coupled with a location 20 minutes by car from Palm Springs itself, staying here provides very little by way of a quintessential ‘Coachella Valley Experience.’

One of only two luxe properties built into the side of the valley (the other is Sensei Porcupine Creek, four miles further south) the Ritz-Carlton provides 180-degree panoramic views of the desert landscape. The Edge restaurant allows guests to enjoy one of the best meals in the region while gazing out over the setting sun, and an assortment of firepits are hubs for socializing along the fence. Its sister restaurant, State Fare, serves a selection of highly rated food sourced exclusively in the Golden State.

Accommodations are comfortable and classic, with simple furnishings and familiar Ritz-Carlton sophistication. Several rooms feature their own terraces with fire pits, ideal for nights of stargazing. Wellness seekers will be happy with the hillside spa which offers a variety of plant-based, holistic treatments along with the hikes right on property. And for those who are visiting the area for some sunny relaxation, there are both adults-only and kid-friendly pools. For families, there is a kids club and the grounds of the property are perfect for letting the little ones run free.

So ultimately, while the Ritz-Carlton isn’t the quintessential Palm Springs hotel, it is a great option for those who want to experience the area without being drawn in too deeply.

Because of its more remote location and traditional décor, the Ritz-Carlton is better suited for families and those looking for a relaxing, luxurious stay, and don’t need to venture off property often.
