Review
Twenty minutes upstream from Victoria Falls, Thorntree River Lodge is an optimal setting from which to experience Zambia’s offerings at your preferred pace, be it active adventuring or a more relaxed clip. The serene base occupies impressive real estate on the edge of the Zambezi River where it divides Zambia and Zimbabwe —a herd of elephants can often be spotted bathing by the opposite riverbanks in the neighboring country.
Each of the 12 riverfront suites is thoughtfully designed with a blend of contemporary rustic interiors and pops of African-inspired decor—think textile throw pillows, woven rattan window shades and baskets, and black and white prints showcasing traditional clothing. All suites also have a private plunge pool and sunken outdoor lounge. Thorntree River Lodge welcomes children of all ages and has two family suites with an adjoining walkway.
By the main lodge, there is a small spa and fitness facility, an infinity pool and sunken sitting area and wooden decking sprawled along the riverfront with spectacular views from sunrise to sunset. Aligning with their ethos of unplugged nature, wifi is only accessible in the library, a cozy room with reading materials and sofas.
Meals are enjoyed alfresco in the open-air lounge or in the well-curated wine cellar, which is ideal for more intimate occasions. The cuisine includes international dishes and traditional African flavors, incorporating produce sourced from the property’s garden.
The service at Thorntree River Lodge is exceptional from arrival to departure. With harmonious sounds of traditional African song heard from a distance, arriving guests are welcomed with a vibrant performance by the lodge’s staff, fresh lemonade and a complimentary shoulder massage. But tranquility is not the only theme here, as an abundance of activities are available from visits to the mighty Victoria Falls, fishing expeditions and canoeing, to game drives, cultural experiences and river cruises. Not to be missed is a rhino walk in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, home to the country’s only living white rhinos (which are now under 24/7 protection by rangers). For adrenaline-seekers, bungee jumping and helicopter excursions over the falls can be arranged on request.
