Review

The small hilltop village of Valldemossa has been named the most beautiful village in the world by National Geographic. With its apricot-stone houses and regal Carthusian monastery, the village is certainly in the running for such a title. This small restored property with only twelve rooms sits beneath the village on the crest of a hill giving it extraordinary views from every angle. The new owners, who also did a brilliant job restoring Hotel Can Cera, a palace hotel in Palma, have brought just the right mix of modern freshness to this classical structure. They have left the white-washed walls and stone arches but lightened the ambiance with modern furniture, artwork and lighting. Each of the twelve rooms is unique, with some in the main house with views up to the monastery and others tucked into the garden or a small cottage. In addition to a wonderful pool area that faces terraced orange groves, there is a spa with a renowned island healer and a restaurant, De Tokio a Lima that has become a favorite of many residents for its delicious Peruvian Japanese menu of small plates. Think Iberian pork sashimi with sweet and sour mango sauce and sesame. You can eat in the main dining room that faces the million-dollar view of the village or out on the terrace, which has gorgeous views of the valley. Just a short walk from the town, this is a retreat that feels like a secret oasis.
