Review

The Yeatman Hotel is located on the other side of the Douro River from Porto, in the town of Vila Nova de Gaia. The hotel's setting means guests get the best panoramic views of Porto’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Each part of the property - the spa, the pool, the rooms, the restaurants, the lobby - faces out to Porto; there’s no such thing as a bad seat in the house.

The inside is simply spellbinding: the property’s traditional English style is complemented with bold visuals like bright red tapestries, striped wallpapers, plush teal couches and black leather ottomans, an ode to the Portuguese spirit. Each of the 82 rooms and suites (all with private balconies) is dedicated to a Portuguese wine producer that’s stocked in the hotel’s wine cellar with decorative touches chosen by the wine producer themselves—everything from a photo of the family who owns the vineyard to their personal glassware or history book.

The expertly curated food and wine offerings available here have made the Yeatman a sought-after destination. Executive Chef Ricardo Costa has been winning the restaurant a Michelin star every year since 2011 for his inventive menu of Portuguese staples, achieving the restaurant's status as the first Northern Portuguese restaurant to earn two Michelin stars. And with a wine cellar stocked with 1,000 different bottles of international varietals—most of which are from Portugal—there's no better place to wine and dine than at The Yeatman.

The Caudalie Vinothérapie Spa does not disappoint with its inventory of treatments highlighting the transformative benefits of wine. The most indulgent of these are the barrel treatments, where a pampering scalp, neck and shoulder massage is administered while you’re soaking in a bath of grape extract. The hotel also has a kids club, indoor pool and large gym.

A note about the location:T he Yeatman isn’t in the middle of Porto—it’s technically not even in the same city—but the river, which separates it, is a 15-minute walk from the hotel. This walk does include a rather steep hill going both too and from the hotel. Additional options to reach Porto include taking a taxi to the Monastery Serra do Pilar (~5 minutes) or walking down to Cais de Gaia and taking the gondola (6€ per person) up to the Monastery. From there you need only cross the bridge, and Portugal’s second city is yours for the taking.

Who Should Stay

Wine lovers, foodies and those seeking extraordinary views and service who don’t mind the property’s removed location.
