Bandung, Indonesia–born chef Sonja Pereira moved to the Netherlands in 1985, and, having been disappointed with the mediocre Indonesian restaurants in the city, opened Blue Pepper in 2002. An Amsterdam establishment, the romantic restaurant is located in the bohemian Amsterdam West neighborhood and draws patrons with what many consider to be the best Indonesian cuisine in the city. The white-tablecloth eatery fosters a serene atmosphere, with soothing blue walls and beautifully plated dishes. Guests can opt to order à la carte or one of the set menus, including the adored rijstaffel (rice table) offering, which features several specialty dishes including Menado-style chicken satay with peanut and chili sauce and soft shell crab with mango and pineapple salad. For an even more elevated evening, Blue Pepper offers weekend dinner cruises on its vintage saloon boat.
