Featuring movie posters, Indian artifacts, vintage photographs and delicate hanging string lights, the atmospheric dining room at Portland’s most esteemed Indian restaurant feels like something out of a hipster Bollywood film. Inspired by the fragrant street food in India, chef and owner Troy MacLarty opened Bollywood Theater in 2012, and the eatery remains a favorite of locals and critics alike for its flavorful, indulgent cuisine. The kitschy, fast-casual restaurant now has two locations. Highlights include such classics as the chicken kati roll—a staple dish in Kalcutta—which is served wrapped in a paratha (Indian flatbread) and with egg, pickled onion and green chutney. Dishes are served on steel plates, and the cuisine is great for sharing; order a few thali platters—spreads of curry, rice, raita and paratha—for a traditional Indian feast.
