Tokyo is serious about its coffee, and many of the cafés are more akin to restaurants than grab-and-go spots. The most famous of the city’s coffeeshops is Chatei Hatou, a dimly-lit Shibuya destination that opened in the 1990s. The old-school dining room, with a handful of tables, an L-shaped bar and antique china lining the walls, is also the perfect place to enjoy Hatou’s superb coffee, tea and cakes.
