Located in Arashiyama, this memorable restaurant is set on the edge of a mountain, nestled into the trees overlooking the Hozu River. In fact, it’s so tucked away that you can’t reach it by car; guests must embark on a short walk on an unpaved path and climb a number of stone steps to reach the serene wood-paneled dining room. Diners, who must select a set menu at time of reservation, sit on the floor and make a deep dive into the world of tofu, one of Kyoto’s specialties that is regarded by many as the best on the planet. The succession of dishes—which showcase tofu in an impressive variety of formats, from layered yuba and tempura to simmered yudofu and rich gratin—is ethereal.
