Deriving its name from Oregon and Oaxaca, Orox was founded in 2005 but has a history that goes back four generations. In 1930s Mexico, Felipe Martinez made sandals and equipment for his local baseball team. The skilled craftsman passed his techniques along to his son, who in turn taught his son the same methods. Now run by the fourth generation of the Martinez family, Orox sells bags, belts and small leather goods (wine caddies, dog collars) out of its workshop in Portland’s Chinatown. The durable pieces are masculine in feel, but have a streamlined elegance inspired by the current owner’s time spent living in Japan.
