Episode 40 Charleston’s New International African American Museum with CEO Dr. Tonya Matthews

The long awaited International African American Museum (IAAM) is finally opening its doors on June 27th in Charleston, South Carolina. Located at the historical and sacred site of Gadsden’s Wharf – an international slave port where an estimated 45 percent of enslaved Africans entered the United States – the museum honors the untold stories of African Americans through powerful, thought-provoking exhibits and is sure to quickly become a top attraction for visitors.

Dr. Tonya Matthews, the CEO and President of IAAM, joins Melissa to discuss the two-decade journey of creating IAAM, why Charleston was chosen as the location of the museum, the exhibitions she’s most excited for guests to witness, including the Center for Family History, the plans for the grand opening, as well as what she loves most about Charleston. With a background in biomedical engineering and education, as well as experience as a published and performing poet, Dr. Matthews is a strong leader and captivating speaker and is sure to have you adding Charleston and a visit to IAAM to your travel list.

This week on travel hacks, Melissa shares her tips for navigating airline travel this summer during one of the busiest travel seasons yet.
