My City: Rome with Sophie Habsburg

Fashion icon—and Valentino muse—Sophie Habsburg shares her guide to Rome, where she has called home for more than 30 years.

A longtime fashion icon—and former model and Valentino muse—Sophie Habsburg always had a keen eye for colors. And when she didn’t like handbags that she saw for sale, she set out to make some for herself. Of course, they were fabulous: classically stylish but with bohemian colors and signature silver snake hardware. Below, the designer shares her guide to Rome, where she’s lived for 33 years. “Rome is such a unique and beautiful city with a rich history and vibrant culture,” she says. “The sun shines most of the year, and it's an incredible place to call home, even if only part-time.”

Mornings in Rome

I love taking early morning walks with my dogs to catch the piazzas before the tourists flood in. It feels like a trip back in time. There's this charming bakery in our neighborhood called Tulipane. Or Caffè Novecento with its outside tables.

Lunch Spots

My go-to lunch spot is my own house. I hit up the Campo de’ Fiori market in the morning for fresh local goodies and beautiful flowers, perfect for sharing with family and friends.

What is your favorite museum to visit over and over again, and for first-timers?

I love wandering into random churches I stumble upon during my walks; they always hold lovely surprises. Galleria Borghese is another favorite. Newcomers to Rome should see the Vatican and its museums.

Break Time

Espresso anytime of the day—it's the Italian way!

Dinner Favorites

For dinner, Pierluigi is my top choice. It's popular with both locals and foreigners, thanks to its delicious food and lovely piazza setting that’s perfect for any occasion. For a delicious Italian dinner, we go to Trattoria al Moro.

Neighborhood Wanderings

My advice for first-timers: get lost in the center of Rome. The city is full of surprises, and every road leads to something amazing. I also love Trastevere. It's just a stroll across the bridge to a more up-and-coming part of Rome. For those who've been here before, I suggest exploring areas outside the historic center. Rome's history is everywhere you look.

Favorite Hotel

Hotel De Russie is my go-to recommendation. It's a Roman icon in itself.

Where to See Nature

Rome isn't big on nature spots, but you can find some tranquility in Villa Pamphili and Villa Borghese. If I have more time, a day at the beach.

Clothing Stores

Check out Via del Governo Vecchio with its side streets and Via di Monseratto.

For Special Gifts

I often turn to artisan shops in the city. They offer unique and thoughtful presents. My neighbor’s shop Vio’s Cooking is ideal!

Food Shops

Definitely the Campo de’ Fiori market
