Planter's Inn

The only Relais and Chateaux property in Charleston was originally built in 1844 as a dry goods store. The structure’s age is apparent by the quirky nooks and crannies in the guest rooms, causing no two of the antique-filled, high-ceilinged accommodations to be the same. With 64 rooms, the property is much smaller than Charleston Place, which sits across the street, and the hotel has a more understated, subdued feel. The comfortable rooms are well-appointed, many with four-poster beds, original furnishings and working fireplaces, as well as sparkling modern bathrooms. The Governor's Suite is a particularly gracious accommodation, with a grand living room and elegant décor.

The hotel’s location directly on the Market (the original center of Charleston but today’s most touristy area) results in the inn feeling particularly exposed and not at all discreet—especially the ground floor rooms with windows at street-level. Walls and windows are however exceptionally well insulated, so remain very quiet.

Separated from the main building by a courtyard (where guests can take breakfast) sits the more modern addition of the Piazza building. The rooms there don’t have the same quirky layouts as those in the main building, so guests who prefer more typical hotel room layouts might be happier here, though be warned that the rooms do share balconies. Guests differ on which part of the hotel they prefer—some appreciate the charm of the old building, others welcome the more straightforward rooms in the modern wing.

The property’s highly popular restaurant, Peninsula Grill, is beloved for good reason, the food and ambiance are some of the best in town.

Exterior View - Wentworth Mansion, Charleston, American South

Wentworth Mansion

Even those who steer clear of Victorian décor or cozy hotel common areas typically love Wentworth Mansion, because its charm is welcome and authentic rather than kitschy. Indeed, the lounge's stained glass is original Tiffany; the lemonade in crystal pitchers is freshly squeezed every afternoon.

Built in 1886 as a private home for a family with thirteen kids, the five-floor mansion was converted to a hotel in 1996. Most rooms have fireplaces; all come with king-sized beds, marble bathrooms with separate showers and whirlpool baths. Some rooms (which range from 400 to 1,000 square feet) also have day beds and plenty of space for rollaway beds to accommodate children. Rooms are filled with tasteful Victorian dark wood furniture, heavy upholstery and velvet coronet canopied beds. Such thoughtful touches include a bag of Charleston peanuts next to the bed along with a note reading, If these make you thirsty, help yourself to a complimentary drink in the minibar.

The cupola on the fifth floor has a stunning outdoor terrace that is ideal for sunset viewing or for an after-dinner drink. The hotel’s fantastic restaurant, Circa 1886, serves dinner as well as a delicious breakfast in a converted carriage house.
