The two greatest influences on 20th century fashion are being celebrated in retrospectives in London and Paris, and while the shows are quite different, if you have the chance to visit them both, you will be treated to an incredible history lesson and visual treat. Cristóbal Balenciaga, who was called the Master by his fellow couturiers for his sculptural tailoring, is being honored with an exhibit at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London through February 18, 2018. The show encompasses two gallery levels and while there are some video elements, the stars of the exhibit are the dresses themselves more than their staging. Balenciaga’s influence on Dior, Givenchy and contemporary talents like Yohji Yamamoto and Dries van Noten is clear, and each example on display is an exquisite statement. So if you can start with this exhibit and then head to Paris to see the Dior show, you will follow the chronology properly but also build up to the drama of a blockbuster show.
