Located along the river Garonne, which is much wider than the Seine, Bordeaux is a beautiful French city in the southwestern region of the country. Long called the “Sleeping Beauty” of France and the world capital of wine, it is has been restored in the last decade (its Port of Moon is a UNESCO World Heritage Site), making it ripe for exploration and an ideal base from which to see the region.

    5 Days: Essential Bordeaux

Experience the best of Bordeaux with a balance of solo exploration, guided touring, special access, classes and day trips. Here is just one example of what our destination experts can create for you.

    • Days 1-2: Bordeaux City

Upon arrival in this port city, get your bearings with a guided walking tour of the historic center, including such monuments as the Cathédral de Bordeaux and the impressive Place de la Bourse. Strolling in the cool Chartrons neighborhood is a must for some shopping along Rue Nôtre-Dame, as are relaxed meals at authentic French bistros (our experts can lead you to the top tables). Music buffs should get tickets for a performance at the exquisite Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux.

    • Day 3: Cap Ferret

On day two, have breakfast, then take a train or car to the Atlantic coast. The Bassin d’Arcachon is a gorgeous bay between the towns of Arcachon and Cap-Ferret, where many Parisians have second homes. Between the two, the main attraction is the Dune of Pyla, Europe’s largest sand dune and an impressive spectacle. Both Arcachon and Cap-Ferret are famous for their extreme tides and oysters. After visiting the dune, take a boat to Cap Ferret and have lunch at Le Bouchon du Ferret, a seafood market and restaurant.

      Day 4-5: Bordeaux Countryside

After checking into a quintessential French country escape, book time at a world-renowned spa and relax in the beautiful garden setting. True oenophiles can also consider being based in the middle of wine country – possibly at a château – with behind-the-scenes tours at the region’s most fabled wineries and a guided visit to the quaint town St. Emilion. A wine-making workshop can also be organized by our destination specialists.

“Our guide was great. We really enjoyed her and got a great overview of the city. I highly recommend her—and Bordeaux is beautiful.”

“Bordeaux still has an artisanal, homemade vibe, with cute boutiques, a fabulous café and bar scene, and some very good brasseries serving the unapologetically rich southwestern cuisine. Historic monuments seamlessly blend with contemporary additions, including a couple of very cool, up-and-coming neighborhoods.”
