Alila Marea Beach Resort Encinitas
Set along the incredible bluffs of San Diego’s northern coastline, Alila Marea Beach Resort Encinitas is a laid-back sanctuary blends with the terrain. Opened in 2021, it has become a popular spot for both locals and visitors alike. The vibe is quintessential Southern California and very adult-centric, with days best begun with a complimentary breakfast for two on the bluffs before heading down into the charming town of Encinitas (preferably on e-bikes!). While it is further removed from central San Diego (located approximately 30 minutes from downtown), it is one of the few five star properties that is also oceanfront in San Diego county.
The property’s decor and amenities incorporate local elements, from the paneling made of refurbished surfboards in the bar room by the pool to the photography and artwork, all by SanDiego-based artists. Accommodations are spacious and comfortable, with plush furnishings and an earthy color palette. Suite options include living areas with indoor/outdoor fireplaces and furnished outdoor spaces overlooking the ocean. All bathroom products are made with recycled materials. Most of the rooms do not have a bathtub which, while disappointing, reflects the hotel’s wider sustainability efforts. Besides, the eucalyptus hanging in the showers and the ocean views certainly make up for it. At Alila Marea, you’ll fall asleep and awaken to the tune of crashing waves.
The signature spa offers a variety of treatments. But perhaps the best, most rewarding treatment at Alila is simply soaking in the views from the hotel’s pool and infinity hot tub on the bluffs. There is also beach butler service during summer months, as well as daily morning yoga overlooking the ocean, and surfboards and e-bikes available for guest use. The resort’s restaurant, VAGA, has quickly become a hotspot and the stunning terrace is a favorite of many to enjoy sunset cocktails.
