Review

Once the palazzo of Italian opera composer Gaetano Donizetti—who wrote the opera Don Pasquale for which the hotel’s restaurant is named—Hotel Maalot opened in fall 2021 after being meticulously restored and exquisitely designed with vibrant colors, playful fabrics and a blend of vintage and modern furniture. Set on the busy pedestrian-only Via delle Muratte, the entrance to Hotel Maalot is so discreet that guests might actually miss it. Upon taking one step inside, guests find themselves in an unexpected urban oasis filled with potted palms, eclectic decor and a private arts club vibe. The welcoming staff escorts guests through both a beautiful arched hallway lined with contemporary art and the winter garden-inspired restaurant to the cozy reception room that resembles a fashion editor’s office—with club chairs covered in zebra-patterned fabric, shelves of eye-catching books and a fireplace.

Part of the Shedir Collection, which also includes properties like Capri Tiberio Palace and Hotel Vilon—the hotel has 30 rooms and suites across four floors that have been decorated in bold colors and Jover fabrics. There are three categories of both rooms and suites, and each room has beds with beautifully upholstered headboards and luxurious linens. The charming rooms are outfitted with all the modern conveniences, as well as comfortable seating, black lacquer desks, well-appointed walk-in closets and spacious Arabescato Corchia marble bathrooms (many with double sinks). The Donizetti Suite is the pride of the hotel. Despite the bustle of activity on the Villa delle Muratte, the rooms are quiet and peaceful.

Guests will want to linger after enjoying a meal or drink in the ground floor restaurant Don Pasquale and its adjoining common areas and bar. (This lounge-like area makes the property attractive to the younger set who want to socialize here.) Chef Domenico Boschi creates traditional Roman dishes with a contemporary flair that matches the art-filled space and vibrant, modern furnishings in an Italianate setting. The hotel also has a fitness center, a rare find in Rome, especially in a boutique property. The staff aims to please, and provides personalized concierge services to ensure that guests make the most of their Roman holiday. Don’t miss the opportunity to walk a few steps out the door for an early morning visit to the Trevi Fountain before the masses arrive.
