Where in the world are Indagare members going next? A look at our most-booked hotels for fall 2023—which we’re loosely defining as between September 5, the day after Labor Day, and November 30—shows that this season, they’re heading on culture-rich city escapes to London, New York and Paris; on outdoorsy getaways to the American West; and on shoulder-season retreats to the Med. Blackberry Mountain

22. Hôtel Ritz Paris

Name a more iconic hotel than Ritz Paris, where the guest list reads like a who’s who of royals, style legends, politicos and Hollywood stars. Here, the Belle Époque lives on in gilded grandeur overlooking Place Vendome, with antique furnishings, rich fabrics and nearly 300 chandeliers. Cocktails in the oak-paneled Bar Hemingway—named for Ernest, a Ritz regular—are a must.

21. Hotel Sacher Wien

Vienna keeps on reinventing itself (see some recent updates here), but it’s comforting to know that Hotel Sacher Wien remains, more or less, unchanged. This bastion of imperial splendor has been in the Sacher family since the 1870s, and continues to be the most recognizable hotel in town. Décor here (from French designer Pierre-Yves Rochon) is traditional, service is excellent, and the Sachertorte, a Viennese specialty that originated here, is a must.

20. Four Seasons Hotel de Bergues, Geneva

Hotels in Swiss cities—perennially ranked among the most “liveable” places on earth—have the unique challenge of being just as impossibly pleasant as their superlative surroundings. Four Seasons Hotel de Bergues handles that task with aplomb. The setting, for starters, is hard to surpass: a stately 19th century building on the riverfront, just where the clear (and clean) waters of Lake Geneva flow into the Rhone. And the interiors, from French designer Pierre-Yves Rochon, continue the theme: a color palette of soft blues brings the lake views in. Add in an excellent spa, a couple of Geneva’s top restaurants and quintessential Four Seasons service, and the word “liveable” seems just about right.

19. Villa La Coste, Provence

For oenophiles and modern art and architecture lovers, few places in the world can compare to the paradise that is Villa La Coste. Guests in its 28 minimalist suites can explore hundreds of acres of provençal woodlands dotted with installations from the likes of Frank Gehry, Richard Serra and Renzo Piano, before (as well as during, and after, for that matter) enjoying wines from the renowned Chateau La Coste vineyard.

18. Hotel Eden, Rome

It’s all about the views at Hotel Eden: 98 light-filled rooms and two rooftop terrace restaurants overlook the rooftops of the Eternal City from a hilltop vantage point near the Spanish steps and Borghese Gardens. And the views inside are noteworthy, too, with high ceilings, mirrored armoires, marble white bathrooms and Murano glass vases.

17. The Peninsula Istanbul

The newest hotel to appear on this list, The Peninsula Istanbul opened in February, and quickly became an Indagare favorite in Turkiye’s cultural capital. What our members are loving so far: high-touch service, a massive spa and gleaming Bosphorus views. Built inside four heritage buildings, the hotel’s location in Karaköy means guests are close to—but pleasantly removed from—the crowded historic center.

16. Hotel de Russie, Rome

“Few things in life are as enjoyable as a drink—or a morning hotel breakfast—in the garden at Hotel de Russie,” writes Indagare editorial director Annie Fitzsimmons in her love letter to this Rocco Forte property, conveniently located near Piazza del Popolo and the Spanish Steps. Plush velvets and silks in soothing tones, vintage furniture, and that unparalleled garden—which rises up a hill from the hotel’s central courtyard—makes any stop here feel like a Roman holiday.

exudes an undeniably posh and uniquely British sensibility. Its 122 rooms are a pleasing combination of traditional and contemporary, and its three-Michelin-starred Hélène Darroze restaurant and World’s Best Bar-winning The Connaught Bar are Mayfair mainstays.

14. The Mark, New York City

After the quiet summer season, New York comes alive again in the fall: new theater, new museum exhibitions and renewed city crowds. And this autumn, Indagare members’ top choice for sleeping in the City that Never Sleeps is The Mark, a discreet but stylish hideaway near the Met Museum. The bar draws Upper East Side locals (who probably wish they were staying in the hotel’s penthouse suite, among the largest in the United States).

13. Four Seasons Hotel Firenze

has beautiful grounds and a family-friendly pool, all within an easy walk from the Duomo. Its sumptuous, one-of-a-kind rooms and suites are divided between two historic buildings—a 15th century palazzo and a 16th century convent—and showcase museum-caliber detailing. Another highlight: dinners served al fresco or in the vaulted dining room at Il Palagio.

12. The Yeatman Hotel

It feels like everyone is going to Portugal in 2023. And among Indagare members, many of them are checking-in at Porto’s boutique Yeatman Hotel. Across the Douro River from the historic center, the Yeatman—including its restaurant, spa, pool and all 82 rooms—looks out over the UNESCO-recognized Old Town.

11. Four Seasons Hotel Prague

Uninterrupted views over the Vltava River and Prague Castle, coupled with attentive service befitting the brand, Four Seasons Hotel Prague is Indagare members’ top pick in the Golden City. Its central location makes it an ideal home base for exploring Prague, with Smetana Museum just next door and the Charles Bridge within easy walking distance.

10. Four Seasons Hotel Mexico City

Mere steps from Chapultepec Park on Avenida Paseo de la Reforma, Four Seasons Hotel Mexico City is in a prime location for exploring the sprawling metropolis. The eight-story property surrounds its iconic open-air courtyard, home to lush gardens and an outdoor restaurant.

9. Six Senses Douro Valley, Portugal

We’ve already concluded that everyone is going to Portugal this year. But really, it seems that everyone is going to Douro Valley, Portugal’s over-the-top scenic wine region. Indagare members love Six Senses Douro Valley, a luxe, 71-room resort centered on a 19th-century manor house but with sleek contemporary design and a fabulous pool—and a signature Six Senses spa.

8. Il Pellicano, Porto Ercole, Italy

Indagare members are holding on to #EndlessSummer vibes with multiple fall bookings at Il Pellicano, one of Italy’s most glamorous seaside resorts. It’s a boutique property, with just 47 rooms. The main attraction: Mediterranean views, best seen from the hotel’s beach club, a collection of white-umbrella-filled terraces descending a rocky cliff from the pool.

7. Le Bristol Paris

As Indagare founder Melissa Biggs Bradley writes in her review of Le Bristol, this beloved hotel in the eighth arrondissement is “stylish but not trendy, sophisticated but not pretentious, and service is embracing yet never overbearing.” A 13,000-square-foot courtyard garden is the hotel’s centerpoint—and one of the largest hotel gardens in Paris—but guests also love the indoor pool on the top floor.

6. Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco, Tuscany

On a hillside overlooking Tuscany’s Val d’Orcia, Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco is a reliable highlight for many Indagare members’ summer visits to Italy—the lavender-lined infinity pool is hard to beat. And this year, they’re eager to visit during the harvest season too. The resort’s 42 rooms and suites—plus 11 farmhouse villas—transformed an abandoned medieval borgo into a rustic-luxe oasis years before “cottagecore” came into the lexicon. The best part of a fall stay? Guests can pick their grapes and drink them too, enjoying Castiglion del Bosco’s award-winning Brunello.

5. Amangiri, Utah

The most booked U.S. hotel for Indagare members this fall: Amangiri, a minimalist’s fantasy that lets Mother Nature do the talking. Nowhere does she talk more appealingly than at the resort’s U-shaped pool, which curves around a massive boulder. Guests can stay in the main building’s the concrete-floor suites with wall-to-wall windows, or at the newer Camp Sarika, with its 10 tented pavilions.

4. La Réserve, Paris

is a gem-box of a hotel, with all the perks of a five-star property (it’s one of the city’s 12 Palace-grade hotels) but scaled down to an intimate scale. The 40 rooms and suites are a study in Belle Epoque, with plenty of silk, velvet and gold-leaf—befitting of the Haussmann-era building’s history as a gift from Napoleon III for his half-brother, the Duc de Morny. But what makes many Indagare members La Réserve loyalists is the staff, who offer personable, high-touch service and welcome guests as family.

3. Claridge’s, London

This landmark Mayfair hotel has been one of the city’s top hotels since the 1860s. In the years since opening, Claridge’s has hosted everyone from Queen Victoria and Winston Churchill to the cast of Barbie. What’s the fuss: Art Deco glamour, excellent service and, since 2022, a massive subterranean spa, with the restaurants and shops of Mayfair just steps away.

2. Kasbah Tamadot, Morocco

One Indagare member called Kasbah Tamadot “practically perfect,” and it’s easy to see why. The resort, part of Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Limited Edition collection, has 28 guest rooms (including 10 fabulous Berber-style tented suites), each done in traditional Moroccan and Bedouin style with statement-piece antiques, and many with outdoor terraces looking out to the Atlas Mountains. After a day exploring (or lounging at the pool), dinner can be served under the stars, and paired with Moroccan wines.
